The first step, before you can clean up any
mold, is to fix the problem that caused it. Whether it is a
plumbing leak, poor ventilation or flood damage, this must be
corrected first before the cleanup process can begin.
The next step is to have a certified mold
inspector perform a detailed inspection of the home which should
include laboratory testing. This testing will serve several
purposes. It will tell you if what you have is truly mold, how high
the levels are, what type of mold it is and how hazardous it is to
you. It will also show how prevalent the mold is in the air of the
home. This will determine whether or not the duct system needs to be
treated and if the home ne eds
to be fogged to kill airborne mold spores.
Mold clean up is a complex process best left
to experienced and certified professionals. Proper Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn and the proper containment
procedures followed to prevent mold from spreading to unaffected
areas of your home.
If this
is not done, a serious risk of cross-contamination can occur,
exacerbating the problem further. Proper containment consists of
sealing off all surrounding mold free zones of the home through use
of a negative pressure air containment system. This system will
isolate the work area and prevent the mitigation of contaminants to
the unaffected areas of the home.
During
a typical mold remediation procedure, many of the following steps
are performed: Remove, properly bag, transport and dispose of
contaminated materials such as drywall, insulation, carpets and
miscellaneous contents.
Hepa Vac all affected work areas such as beams, walls, floors etc.
Then, clean, disinfect and sanitize all affected areas using a
quaternary ammonium chloride blend disinfectant mold killer.
After
this is done, all contaminated areas need to be sealed using an
antimicrobi al
fungicidal protective coating. If testing has determined that a
large count of mold spores are present in the air, it is recommended
that the HVAC System be cleaned and fogged with a mold sanitizing
agent. In addition, the interior of the home should be fogged as
well.
